The DCC Bucs Lose Another Close One
United Tribes defeat Dawson 90-82
Dawson Community College Men’s Basketball Team hit the road to try and find their groove again, but fell short once again, losing to the United Tribes Technical College Thunderbirds. It looked like the outcome would be different early on when DCC raced to a 38-26 lead in the first half. The Thunderbirds came roaring back on a 17-5 run to tie it up at halftime 43-43.
In the first half, DCC held two of the Tribes best scorers to a combined 3-19 from the field and only 8 points, but Amaury Matthews picked up the slack with 17 points. For the Bucs, Stefan Stubbs almost posted a double double in the first half with 10 points and 9 boards. Brent Finn led the way with 11 points. Even though United Tribes only shot 30% in the 1st half they stayed in the game by forcing 12 turnovers and collecting 17 offensive rebounds.
In the 2nd half, the home team gradually built up their lead. They looked like they might pull away late, but then it was DCC’s turn to mount a comeback. They forced a few turnovers and got a couple of transition baskets to cut the lead to 4 points with 1:30 left, but that was as close as they would get. United Tribes iced the game with perfect free-throw shooting. In fact, they were perfect from the line all night long, going 21-21. Forcing 24 turnovers was also another key to the victory. Matthews finished the game with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. They also had five other scorers in double figures. For the Bucs, Stubbs finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Daniel Shedden contributed 17 points, Brent Finn 15 points and Gavin McPherson posted 10. It was the fourth straight conference loss for DCC. They had a good night shooting from the free-throw line at 77% and were reasonable from the 3 point line with 38%, but struggled from 2 point range.
The Bucs return home on Monday night to face Dakota College Bottineau. Monday’s game will be the Barefoot Coaching Night to raise awareness of the millions of kids throughout the world who don’t have shoes.
