DCC’s Comeback Falls Short Against Northwest College
Bucs lose close game 80-85 to Trappers
Playing their first game at home in the past 2 weeks, the Dawson Community College Buccaneers rallied from a 17 point deficit in the 2nd half and closed the gap to 3 points before falling just short. On a traditional 3 point play by Brendon Chevannes with 16.7 seconds left, the Bucs cut it to a 5 point game. On the ensuing inbounds play one of the officials called a travel on Northwest as their player fell down, but after consultation with another official, they decided to award a timeout to the visitors before the travel occurred. After the timeout, the officials called a foul on Chevannes as he dove for the steal. It was his 5th foul and sent the Trapper back to the line for the 34th and 35th free throw of the night. This time they missed both and Daniel Shedden took the ball length of the court for a lay-up which cut the lead to 3 points at 83-80 with eight seconds remaining. It gave Shedden 32 points on the night on 13 of 23 shooting from the field to go along with 9 rebounds. On the inbounds pass, the Buccaneers were forced to foul again. This time Jonathan Koud made both free-throws. He finished with 35 points on the night by making 17-20 from the charity stripe. More importantly the two free throws put the Trappers up by 5 at 85-80. Brent Finn rimmed out another shot with a few seconds left and the game ended with a 5 point win for the visiting Northwest College Trappers.
DCC started the game strong pulling out to a 10-5 lead on a 3-pointer by Gavin McPherson and a couple of driving lay-ups by Daniel Shedden. It was back and forth with 6 ties and 7 lead changes, but Northwest started to pull away late in the first half. DCC struggled to score and when they did score, it didn’t count. Down 7 with a couple minutes left Ryan Strong took a 3 that was rolling around, but right as it was about to fall in a DCC player grabbed the rim and the shot was waved off. In the meantime, Northwest was capitalizing by knocking down their free-throws. They made 17 of 22 in the opening half to build a 47-39 lead.
In the 2nd half, they continued to build on their lead and increased it to 79-62 before DCC mounted its comeback. The difference in the game was 3 point shooting. The Trappers shot 41% from long range (12-29) while the Bucs only shot 19% (6-31). They also outrebounded the hosts 50-41. Koud’s 35 led them, followed by 15 from Skyler Zabriskie and 11 from Blake Hinze. Shedden’s 32 led the Bucs. Brent Finn, Brendon Chevannes and Kolton Wall also scored in double figures.
The loss is the Buc’s 4th straight. They will look to get back on the winning track when they take on Yellowstone Christian College Thursday night at 7:30 in the Toepke Center.
