DCC Drops a Close One to Lamar Community College 86-79
The DCC Bucs wrapped up their 3rd game in three days at the Foss Motors Thanksgiving Classic in Casper, Wyoming, losing to Lamar Community College by 7 points. Both teams looked a little weary early on, but the Bucs jumped out on top with a steal and lay-up by Brendon Chevannes on the 1st possession and another steal and lay-up by Brent Finn shortly after. Wayne Stewart answered back with a traditional 3 point play to make it 4-3. The Bucs went up by 13 points after only seven minutes of action on the strength of a couple of three-pointers by Kolton Wall and Gavin McPherson. Despite being under-sized in the post, DCC outrebounded Lamar 21-20 in the first half and pulled down 10 offensive rebounds. Lamar finally woke up as the first half continued and went on a run of their own with a balanced attack that was led by Jerome LaNeir who had 8 points. The Bucs had a hard time stopping them inside, giving up 24 points in the paint, and Lamar took control of the game heading into halftime with a 40-33 lead.
The Bucs fought hard in the 2nd half to keep the score close. Brent Finn hit some tough driving lay-ups and McPherson added a few more shots from long range, but Lamar built a 14 point lead. DCC didn’t give up though and kept chipping away on the lead, cutting it to 4 in the final minute on a couple of free-throws by Daniel Shedden. Lamar knocked down their free-throws in the final seconds to ice an 86-79 win. DCC’s bench outscored their counterparts 35-21, but it wasn’t enough.
The Buccaneers were led in scoring by Daniel Shedden’s 20 points. Four others posted double figures including Brent Finn’s 16, Kolton Wall and Gavin McPherson with 15 and Brendon Chevannes with 10 points. The Bucs shot 38% from the field and 45% from the 3 point line. They only had 9 turnovers for the game.
Coach Peterson was proud of his team’s efforts, “We fought hard all weekend long and our guys proved that we can play with any team on any given night. We learned a lot from these three games and this will make us much better in the long run.”
The Buccaneers next games will be in a tournament next weekend in Sheridan, Wyoming.
