DCC Men Lose in Overtime at Sheridan
Bucs lose 78-88
In the Best Western Classic in Sheridan, Wyoming, Dawson Community College mounted a furious comeback in the final minutes to force overtime, but couldn’t get over the hump for the win. Sheridan was ahead by 13 with five minutes to go when Brendon Chevannes went to work driving the ball to the basket. No one could stop him getting to the basket. He got in the lane for five baskets in the 2nd half and added five free-throws. With 45 seconds left on the clock, the Bucs were still down by three when Chevannes drove in and kicked it out for a clutch 3-pointer by Brent Finn. On the Sheridan Generals final possession, they couldn’t must up a shot against the stout DCC defense. The Bucs got the ball back with the game tied at 75. Chevannes brought it up and got an open look from 15 feet which rimmed out as the clock expired. In overtime, the Generals got to the free throw line on a majority of their possession and capitalized on those opportunities. For the night they shot 34 for 42 (81%) from the charity stripe. The Bucs were 15-20 from the free-throw line. Foul trouble hurt the Bucs with leading scorer Daniel Shedden fouling out with 8 minutes remaining and Bret Vester fouling out 5 minutes left. Chevannes also played the final 10 minutes of regulation and all of overtime with 4 fouls.
The first half was close with neither team leading by more than 5 throughout. Xavier Jackson led the Generals in the opening half with 11 points. Brent Finn scored 7 and Gavin McPherson scored 6 for the Bucs. Sheridan had the advantage 43-39 going into half-time. They gradually built up their lead as the Bucs got into foul trouble in the second half, but the Bucs didn’t quit and were forced to go with a small lineup which helped them get back into it before eventually losing in overtime 88-78.
Jackson finished with 19 points for the Generals and Darius Jackson scored 20, boosted by 9-9 shooting from the free-throw line. Chevannes led the Bucs with 18 points, 7 assists and 3 rebounds. Kolton Wall had 15 points and Finn had 12 points.
The Bucs will stay in Sheridan and take on Central Wyoming College Saturday at 3:00 pm before returning home for a pair of games next week on Tuesday against Northwest College and Thursday against Yellowstone Christian.
