Lake Region Upsets Dawson Women’s Basketball
Going into the game with a 17-10 record, the Dawson Community College women’s basketball team got a rude awakening this evening, losing to 8-20 Lake Region State College 64-68.
“We’ve been playing rather poorly in these last couple of games,” stated Coach Romeo Lagmay Jr. “Even with our latest victory, it was still a bad performance, and it finally caught up to us tonight. I can’t take away anything from Lake Region, because they did what they were supposed to do and play 40 minutes of basketball. We did not! We’ve been a very good defensive team about 80% of the season, but lately we’ve been missing our assignments. However, if it were to be all summed up, our players didn’t have good practices preparing us for battle, and the end result is what I expected.”
There were only 3 players in double figures and Coach Lagmay believes there are some players who need to step up immediately, “I mean, we are at the conclusion of our season, and to have a few of our key players go missing in action, is not good timing at all. Yes we’re playing bad defense right now, but at least score the basket. Our number 1 scorer on the team went for 2 points tonight. I’m hoping this is a wake-up call before we head into post season play.”
Hailee Brandon led the team with 21 points, along with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Brianna Bergum had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Eva Kingston pumped in 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. Dawson had 18 turnovers with Olivia Williams and Brianna Bergum leading the way with 5 and 4, respectively.
Lady Royal Tiziana Huici led the game with 22 points and had 7 rebounds. Both Laura Ribo and Josie Brodina scored 12 points apiece.
Lake Region outscored Dawson 24-18 from the bench. In all other enhanced statistic areas, the game was pretty much even.
Dawson will be back on the road on Sunday, when they face cross town rival Miles City Community College at 1:00 pm. The Buccaneers will host a non-conference home game the next day in Glendive against the Montana All-Stars at 6:00 pm, followed by an opening first playoff round on Wednesday at 6:00 pm between either Miles or Lake Region.
