DCC Women Land Impact Forward from Turkey
With the post-season quickly approaching, Dawson Community College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. wishes he could use his recent signee. Aylin Michelle Arens is a 6’1 power forward from Ankara, Turkey who recently signed her NJCAA National Letter of Intent to suit up for the Buccaneers next season.
Michelle is the first new addition to the Dawson 2022-2023 roster. “Signing Michelle was a booming pickup. She’s a very physical player who has a presence not only in the paint, but has extended her game to the perimeter. She is capable of scoring big inside and out. I love that she works on her game daily, and the fact that she plays great competition in her country. I plan for her to make an immediate impact for us,” stated Lagmay.
Her high school team, Tema Anadou Lisesi, played in a city championship tournament game, where she scored 13 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and had 4 steals. Michelle plays for Botas Sport, partaking in an U20 nationwide league called BGL (Basketball Youth League). There are a total of 18 teams, and her team is currently in 3rd place. In one particular game, she shined with 19 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. The league is still ongoing, and she is currently averaging 9.25 points, 8.25 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.75 steals. She also got invited to the national team selection camp where they are currently training.
Michelle commented on her signing to Dawson, “I chose Dawson because I believe that I can take my basketball to a higher level by working with Coach Romeo, who has shown great interest in me, and then move on to a D1 or D2 school. Apart from that, I think I will have a good academic preparation period at Dawson.”
