With all the distractions of events on game night, the Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball team held their composure and managed to survive the night, defeating Williston State College 64-62.
The game had 10 ties and 9 lead changes. Promoting the Play 4Kay national breast cancer awareness campaign and honoring all sophomore athletes, the ending result was in the Lady Buccaneers favor.
“It was a great atmosphere. We appreciated all the fan support. It’s difficult to come into Buccaneer Country and win a ball game. I am very proud of our ladies having poise at the end of the game. They locked in and sure enough…we won the game,” said Dawson Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. “I was proud to see our point guard Sabira Ahayeva communicate to her team to keep their composure. Our Bucs play freakin’ tough, and tonight we showed we will compete to the very end, and play another 40 minutes if we need to.”
The difference in the game was free throw shooting, which has been a problem in the past. Dawson shot 79% from the charity stripe. It was the red and black attack that won in every aspect of the game, starting with points in the paint 28-26, points off turnovers 17-14, second chance points 12-9, bench points 32-22, and they outrebounded the Tetons 34-32.
Hailee Brandon (Big Timber, MT) led the game with 18 points, shooting 12-13 from the foul line. Brandon also had 6 rebounds. Eva Kingston poured in 12 points and collected 4 rebounds. Sophomore standout Olivia Williams pumped in 10 points, 7 rebounds, and a game high 4 steals. Captain Brianna Bergum (Garniell, MT) scored 9 points and had a team high 8 rebounds. Bergum also drew two crucial defensive charging calls. Logan Stetzner (Anaconda, MT) rounded out the sophomore honorees with 8 points and 4 rebounds.
Emily Kurkowski led Williston with 17 points. Irene de la Fuente came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 9 rebounds. Hayley MacDonald chipped in with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Dawson will travel to Bismarck State College on Sunday, February 13 to play the Mystics at 1:00pm. Bismarck defeated the Lady Buccaneers 80-76 in overtime in Glendive a few weeks ago.
