The Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball will move on to the Region XIII Semifinal Round after defeating Miles Community College for the 4th time this season 71-48.
It was evident in the 1st quarter that the Lady Bucs were relentless with their red and black attack. Dawson outscored Miles 22-5 in the first quarter, until Miles made a little run in the fourth outscoring Dawson 16-12. The run was not enough to stop Dawson as the Lady Bucs were unstoppable in every statistical category.
DCC outscored Miles in the paint 34-28, off the bench 12-5, and outrebounded them 41-32. The Buccaneers converted 23 points after forcing 24 turnovers. 2nd chance points favored Dawson 13-5.
Dawson Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. shared his opinion on the game, “We came out with a lot of positive energy and motivation. Our practices were intense and the preparation was thorough. I was very proud to see the players respond and execute with a high sense of urgency.” Coach Lagmay continued, “Miles nearly beat us some days ago losing by 2 points. So I know that they would come in and try to steal one, but as mentioned previously, our players were ready for the challenge. It’s hard to win in the Toepke Center with our outstanding support from our student body, the entire campus and community of Glendive.”
Sophomore captain Brianna Bergum led the game with 19 points, along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Eva Kingston recorded a double double of 16 points and 12 rebounds, as well as 1 assist and a game high 5 steals. Sabira Ahayeva pumped in 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Hailee Brandon added 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Samantha Jenkins had a well-rounded game of 2 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Both Logan Stetzner and Olivia Williams chipped in with 6 points apiece.
Dawson advances to the semifinal round on Sunday, February 27 at 1:00 pm in Wahpeton, ND to face the #1 seed North Dakota State College of Science. Dawson lost to Science 60-66 on January 31st.
