Bismarck State College started the game on fire blasting Dawson Community College 29-15 in the first quarter. They continued that blistering streak in the 3rd quarter 31-14. Bismarck defeated Dawson 85-71. However, Dawson did not go out without a fight. The Lady Bucs won both the 2nd and 4th quarters. Bismarck led by as much as 21 points in the 2nd quarter, but Dawson rallied back to reduce the deficit to 6 and the Lady Mystics led going into the half 42-35.
Dawson would tie the game at 46 apiece in the 3rd quarter, but then ran out of gas as Bismarck was just too fast for the visiting team. The Lady Bucs sent Bismarck to the line 23 times, where the Lady Mystics shot a solid 74%. There were 2 Bucs who fouled out, which caused more issues.
DCC Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. stated, “It’s kind of tough when you play all out defense, but then we get into a predicament of foul outs. We have to be smart with little depth on the bench. The ladies played really tough and scrappy as usual, but I think we just lost energy after the comeback in the 2nd quarter. We can’t let teams jump out on us at the beginning of the game. If we stay ready, we don’t have to get ready.”
Even though the Lady Buccaneers outrebounded their opponent 43-38 and with had an advantage with second chance points 19-8, it wasn’t enough as Bismarck took care of business in other areas. Bismarck outscored Dawson in the paint 44-38 and off the bench 30-22, forced 19 turnovers and scored a couple more points off turnovers 20-18. There was just too much firepower from the home team.
Bismarck’s Ashton Kinnebrew and Sydney Gustavsson scored a game high 21 points apiece. Jaiden Baker scored 11 points.
Hailee Brandon led Dawson with 17 points, along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Brianna Bergum was one rebound shy of a double double with 14 points and 9 rebounds, along with 3 assists and 2 steals. Sabira Ahayeva added 12 points and 6 rebounds, but had a negative assist/turnover ratio with 2 assists and a game high 7 turnovers. Eva Kingston chipped in with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Samantha Jenkins also had 9 points and 3 rebounds.
