Former Lady Buc Chasity Pope Playing Professionally
From Alabama to Montana, Chasity Pope found her way to Dawson Community College signing an NJCAA National Letter of Intent to play women’s basketball for the 2017-2018 season. After that season, Pope played for two different universities in Tennessee: one season at Hiwassee College, then two years at Christian Brothers University.
The 6’0 forward/post transferred from NCAA Division I Alabama State University where she was a walk-on player. During her only season at Dawson, Pope averaged 4 points, 5 rebounds, and had a 45% field goal shooting percentage.
Dawson Women’s Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. remembers well his southern product, “I remember recruiting Chasity and working her out in the rain on the outdoor courts in Opelika, AL. I told her and her mother to give Glendive a chance, along with commitment, and you will be able to accomplish your goals. She had some weight issues, and I educated her on nutrition and both mental and physical conditioning. I really loved her attitude and approach. There were times I really got onto her about effort and work ethic, but Chasity bought in, and she had a productive season helping us to 20 wins that year.”
In spring 2021, Pope participated in the Eurobasketball summer league tryouts in Atlanta, GA, and after a few months she was notified in September that a team in Armenia was interested in her services. Pope accepted and started her journey playing professionally overseas. Her initial start was in Armenia and she finished in Portugal. She played preseason in Armenia in 2021 in the Armenian 1 league for Team Artsakh, averaging 11 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists. She recently concluded playing in Portugal for Fayal Sports Club in the 2nd division, where she averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists.
Chasity shared her experience at Dawson, “Dawson Community College gave me my first basketball opportunity on scholarship. This allowed me to meet great people which I still connect with today, and pursue one of my dreams while reaching a goal of mine which was to play collegiate basketball. Coach Romeo Lagmay showed me throughout my time at Dawson that I could do anything I want to do, but I must be disciplined both mentally and physically. This helped start a weight transformation on my body and developed my game. From Dawson, I went on to two four-year colleges to achieve my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I have great memories in Glendive, Montana. I will forever be grateful for Dawson Community College and Coach Romeo for giving me an opportunity and having a huge impact on my life. Although my basketball career is not over, it’s important to remember that every end started with a beginning, and for me that beginning was Dawson Community College.”
Pope plans to continue playing professionally overseas in another country. She will await another contract that usually comes in the summer time.
