Dawson’s Poor Free Throw Shooting Results in Loss
Northwest Community College avenged an earlier loss to Dawson Women’s Basketball by defeating them in Powell 69-64.
Dawson came out very slow and was down after the first quarter 20-9. DCC won every quarter thereafter, but fell short after that slow start. The Lady Buccaneers were victorious in many other facets of the game, including an 18-16 advantage in points in the paint, 16-14 in points off turnovers, and 11-9 in second chance points. It was free throw shooting that the Northwest Lady Trappers took advantage of, shooting 83% (24-29). Dawson shot only 48% (12-25).
A disheartened Dawson Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. expressed his thoughts, “It was a very disappointing afternoon for us. Nothing was really working in our favor, especially at the foul line. If we shoot on the foul line just as great as Northwest did, we win that ball game. Make your free throws, then you win the ball game in a back and forth matchup, and those Lady Trappers executed. Great win for them. I’m still pleased with my team despite not having a post player nor our starting point guard due to injury. We will take a 10-5 record anytime with the current obstacles we are dealing with.”
Northwest’s Darla Hernandez had a game high 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Hailee Brandon of Dawson scored a team high 19 points, along with 5 rebounds. Logan Stetzner chipped in with 11 points. Eva Kingston pumped in 10 points and collected 6 rebounds. Brianna Bergum had a game high of 8 rebounds, scored 9 points, retrieved 2 steals and had an outstanding collection of 4 defensive charges. Natalija Beleska added 9 points and 4 rebounds.
Dawson will go on holiday break and return to action at home, opening the New Year with their last non-conference game on January 4th at 4:00 pm against Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College at the Toepke Center.
