The Lady Buccaneers won again, but not without having to really fight hard for it. Dawson defeated the visiting Northwest College Lady Trappers of Powell, Wyoming 70-64.
Northwest committed 23 fouls, and Dawson was able to capitalize and convert 22 points from them. The Lady Trappers outrebounded Dawson 41-32, but could not score much. Northwest forward Kierra Cutright was an issue against her opponents, posting a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The game went back and forth with 5 ties and 7 lead changes. Northwest not only outrebound Dawson, but they were also able to dominate the inside scoring 40-28, bench scoring 21-4, and have more team assists 19-9. But it was scoring punches from the Lady Bucs that kept Northwest in their place. New Zealand freshman sensation Samantha Jenkins sizzled with 30 points, shooting 7-10 from the foul line and 5-10 from beyond the arc. Samoan power Eva Kingston was just shy of a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Hailee Brandon scored two very important traditional 3-point plays in the 4th quarter, pumping in 11 points, to go along with 6 rebounds and a team high 7 assists. The Lady Bucs had 13 steals and forced 24 turnovers.
Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. commented, “It wasn’t nice again, but we won. I really don’t know how we got the victory with how hard Northwest College played, but what I do know is that we fought harder. That’s what is keeping us in the victory lane. It’s stressful, but relieving at the same time. Samantha showed tonight what she is capable of. Eva didn’t have a good 1st half, but when she shows up, she makes her presence felt. And when you need important plays, here comes Hailee to the rescue. I love to see how our players develop a stronger sense of playing for one another.”
Dawson will host Williston State College in conference play on Friday, November 19 at 6:00pm. Then will play the following day against Bismarck State College at 2:00pm in the Toepke Center.
