Baseball Adds Second Assistant Coach
Bobby Schoonover Added to Staff
Lewis adds Bobby Schoonover to the staff for the 2016-2017 season. Schoonover a Wyoming native, will serve as the offensive coach and recruiting coordinator for the program.
Schoonover started his playing career in the windy city of Casper, Wyoming and would eventually start his coaching career there as well. After one year of college baseball at the University of Sioux Falls, SD where he was a member of the Cougars 2000 SDIAC Conference Championship, he returned home and served in various capacities with the Casper Legion Baseball program. After another stint in 2002 and coaching at various levels years after, he would eventually be named Head Coach for the program in December of 2008. He then guided the program for five years, leading the varsity club to a record of 182-168, two state runner-up finishes in the final two years, and was named Coach of the year in 2013.
Schoonover then moved on to work for two high profile American Legion Baseball programs in the region. In 2014, he assisted Jake Nordbye and lead the Rapid City Post 22 Expos to a Junior Legion State Title and a Runner Up finish at the Midwest Junior Regional. In 2015, Schoonover came back to Wyoming and coached under Tagg Lain at Cheyenne Post 6. Coach Schoonover stated “Both rarely hire outside of their respective baseball family and to have been part of both of these programs was a blessing and something I took a great deal of pride in.”
“I am very thankful for Coach Lewis, DCC, and others for this opportunity. I have been working towards a chance to further my career in this capacity and to do so in this avenue will be one that I won’t take for granted. To be able to follow in the footsteps of some of my well respected friends and colleagues such as Dan McKinney & the late Chris Hodges is an honor and privilege to say the least.”
Schoonover was named an Associate Scout for the Kansas City Royals in 2011 and coached for Big Sky Baseball in 2012 & 2013. “I have been blessed to be part of some really great programs, work with some very talented people, and see some very outstanding athletes. It truly has taken me places I would not have gone otherwise and provided me multiple avenues to make a difference. I am excited to get to work this spring and contribute my efforts towards the program, DCC, and the community of Glendive.”
Bobby graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and will be working at Jefferson Elementary School during his time here in Glendive. At the conclusion of the season, he will make his way back to Wyoming to coach alongside his good friend Nate Perleberg with the Gillette Legion Baseball program, another well respected and established program in the region.
