DCC Women Scares Northwest
It was a week ago the women’s basketball team of Dawson Community College suffered their worst loss of the season to Northwest College by 51 points. This time around the difference was 12 points. With a few minor adjustments, and home court advantage, DCC Lady Buccaneers won the first and last quarter of the game, but fell short as they lost their second game in a row 70-58.
Northwest led by as many as 22 points, but the Lady Bucs would not give up and clawed their way back into the game in the 4th quarter, getting as close as 6 points. Dawson’s started a small lineup with the tallest player being 5’10”. However, DCC used tenacious defense and made their physical presence known in the paint. They also were able to capitalize on speed, causing the Lady Trappers to have 20 turnovers in which DCC converted 15 points. Northwest’s bench once again was too strong for the Lady Bucs, where the Lady Trappers scored 28 to Dawson 2. Dawson also had more steals with less turnovers than Northwest and shot better from the 3 point range with 42%, but Northwest outrebounded the Lady Bucs 44 to 32.
DCC Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. had this to say, “I was really pleased how our team responded today. Despite the loss, the girls battled and tried their best to overcome a major loss to them last week. It just goes to show these girls are in it to win it every game, and won’t let up. For any player and/or team that gives it their sincere 100%, then the outcome doesn’t affect me as much. I’ll go to battle with anyone that puts forth their best effort.”
MacKinzie Verke had her career high with a near perfect game of 22 points shooting 4/4 from three point and 4/4 from the foul line, in addition to having 4 rebounds. Ejanae Coopwood chipped in with 12 points.
