Lady Bucs with another Conference Win
DCC win 93-73
The Lady Buccaneers of Dawson Community College continue to stay in the upper echelon of the women’s basketball Mon-Dak conference standings by defeating United Tribes Technical College 93-73. However, it wasn’t that easy in the beginning of the game as DCC was met with strong offensive power by UTTC.
The Lady Thunderbirds had 3 players in double figure scoring: Mia Wilkinson led with 23, Mahala Shawl had 20 and Tariq Brownotter added 14. There was 4 lead changes, 5 ties and the Thunderbirds were only down 2 points at the end of the first quarter. But DCC had just as much firepower in other ways. The Lady Bucs caused 29 turnovers, had 15 steals, and had better shooting percentages from the field and 3-point line. Of those 29 forced turnovers, DCC converted 29 points. Dawson also outrebounded United Tribes 43-38.
Alexius Foster led the game with 23 points. Lexia Bell-White had 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Ejanae Coopwood added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 blocked shots. Emily Harwood chipped in with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. MacKinzie Verke had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and led the game with 6 assists.
Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. said, “I can see that our team is improving defensively. We do a great job of defending on ball, but our focus has been converting off turnovers. That’s an area the players are improving on. Also, we are starting to see more of a sense of urgency to score from our starters. That’s always good because that’s the object of the game.”
DCC will be on the road this Monday in their 5th conference game vs. Dakota College at Bottineau on January 22nd.
