DCC Avenges Last Week’s Loss to Northwest to Move to 12-3
The Dawson Community College flipped the tables on Northwest College Friday night at the Toepke Center in Glendive. A week ago, the Trappers beat up on the Buccaneers 81-67 by winning the rebound battle and holding the Bucs to a low shooting percentage. This time around, the Buccaneers won the rebound battle and held the visitors to 41% shooting from the field and 26% from 3-point range to win 91-73. DCC Coach Joe Peterson was elated, “We really needed this win. They took it to us last week down there and I thought we came out and played a lot harder and tougher. We played strong defense and controlled the glass. When we do that, we are a pretty good basketball team.”
The home team jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first 5 minutes of the game. Simon Falokun got them started off with a couple of inside buckets and then Tate Savoie followed that up with two three-pointers. Falokun came back with a couple of free throws and a couple other baskets to give the Bucs an early advantage. DCC built its biggest lead of the first half at 24-7 a few minutes later with the combination of Reece Green and Tyler Tanner. Green scored on an assist from Tanner and then Tanner connected on two 3-pointers on assists from Green for each. Northwest fought back with a 12-2 run that cut the score to 26-19. DCC continued to hold a solid advantage in the final five minutes until Blake Hinze hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Northwest to pull within 10 at 46-36. DCC shot 52% from the field in the opening half, 46% from the 3-point line and 77% from the free throw line while holding Northwest to 25% shooting from the 3-point line.
In the second half, the closest the visiting Trappers would get was a 5 point deficit at 48-43. The Bucs put the game away with a 12-0 run halfway through the second half. The run was fueled with buckets from Tyrell Harper and David Shepard as well as six free throws from Brent Finn. DCC eventually gained a 20 point advantage at 80-60 before finishing with a 91-73 victory. The win moved the Bucs to a 12-3 record on the year.
Once again there were five Bucs in double figures led by Brent Finn’s 23 points, Tate Savoie and Simon Falokun both scored 15, David Shepard with 12 and Tyrel Harper with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Tyler Tanner came off the bench to contribute 8 important points to go along with 3 rebounds. DCC shot 48% for the game and 44% from the 3 point line. Umar Jalloh led the scoring for Northwest with 18 points and 8 rebounds.
The Bucs will take a short break for Final Exams this week and then return to action against Stone Child College on Thursday night at 6:00 pm. Their final game before the Christmas break will be on Saturday at 12:00 noon against Top 25 Gillette College.
