Dawson Basketball Signs Texas Guard
Dawson Community College Basketball Coach Joe Peterson announced the signing of Ty Buckmon, “We are really excited to add Ty to our Buccaneer family. We were thrown a curve ball earlier this month when one of our signees received a D1 offer close to home. We were worried he would be hard to replace this late in the summer, but the timing worked out perfectly with Ty. He is a high character young man with good length, skill and athleticism. He can play any of the three guard spots and will be an impact player on both sides of the ball. Ty’s a winner and affects the game in a lot of different ways.”
Buckmon is a 6’3 guard from The Woodlands College Park High School just outside of Houston, TX. As a senior he helped lead his team to a 27-9 record and a second straight District Championship. He averaged 11.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.3 apg and 2.3 spg while being selected 1st Team All District and 1st Team All Montgomery County. He earned those same distinctions as a junior, but was also selected as the District MVP while averaging 13.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 2.7 apg. They finished 22-11 in Buckmon’s sophomore year and he was named 2nd Team All District. He scored over 1,000 points in his four year high school career.
Buckmon commented, “I’m grateful for the opportunity and now it’s time to maximize that to the best of my ability!”
Ty’s dad, Tyrone Buckmon, understands the benefits of Junior College Basketball. He played at Coffeyville Community College in the early 90’s before transferring to Idaho State. Tyrone still holds the Idaho State record for assists in a game (17), season and career, even though he only played there for two seasons. He is also 4th in career steals.
Coach Clifton McNeely from The Woodlands College Park High School said, “Dawson is getting a player with tremendous upside!”
The Dawson Buccaneers are coming off a 27-6 season and a third straight Region Championship. Coach Peterson is replacing 9 sophomores who graduated and moved on to the four-year level.
