DCC’s Reggie Martin and Akili Prince are the 7th and 8th Buccaneers from this year’s regional championship team who are moving on to play at the four-year level.
Martin signed a National Letter of Intent with Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. OBU is a NCAA Division II school in the Great American Conference. The Tigers are coached by former NBA player Dennis Nutt. Nutt is entering his 11th season as head coach at OBU and has led the Tigers to two Great American Conference Tournament Championships and one regular season title.
Martin is a 6’3 guard from North Caddo, Louisiana who earned 1st Team All-Conference and All-Region honors as a sophomore at Dawson this past season. He was Dawson’s leading scorer, averaging 12 points per game in conference to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals. Martin shot 54% from the field and 42% from the three-point line in conference games. He was 2nd in the conference in three-point percentage and 7th in field goal percentage. Martin came on strong in the second half of the season, scoring at least 8 points in all 16 games and reached double figures 13 times. His season high was 24 points vs. Bismarck State.
Coach Peterson shared, “Reggie is on a great trajectory. Because of his work ethic, he has gotten so much better these past two years, and he will keep on improving. Ouachita is fortunate to have him with 3 years of eligibility remaining. The positive attitude and energy he brings every day will be a great boost for any program.”
Buccaneer Akili Prince also announced his commitment last week. Prince will be playing for Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. The Bulldogs are an NCAA Division III school in the Great Northeast Conference and coached by Joe Cabral.
Prince is a 6’4 wing/forward from St. George, Utah. He has played with the Bucs for the past two seasons, helping them to a 50-9 record and back to back region championships. Prince played in 17 games this season and averaged 2.2 ppg and 1.1 rpg in 8 minutes per game while shooting 58% from the field and 44% from the 3-point line.
“Akili has been a vital part of our program for the past few years,” said Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. “He is very mature and acts like a pro, showing up early every day, putting in the time and being responsible for his own growth and development. He does so many little things on and off the court that led to our success as a program. Dean seems like a great fit for Akili. He will add a lot to their program.”
