Buccaneer Basketball Produces Two POW and MVP Awards
On the opening weekend of the college basketball season, the men’s and women’s basketball programs of Dawson Community College won the 2022 Preseason Mon-Dak Tip Off Tournament in New Town, ND at the Four Bears Casino Resort. All of the eight conference teams played three games over the weekend and both DCC basketball programs swept all of their opponents.
In addition to winning the tournament championship, a player from each team was selected as the Most Valuable Player and honored with the conference’s first Player of the Week Award.
The first Mon-Dak men's basketball Player of the Week and MVP of the Buster Gilliss Mon-Dak Tip-Off Tournament was Joe Mpoyo, a 6'4" sophomore guard. During the Buccaneers' three tournament games, he shot 40% from the field scoring 53 points, along with 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 8 steals. Joe is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He attended Meridian High School in Meridian, Idaho.
The first Mon-Dak women's basketball Player of the Week and MVP of the Buster Gilliss Mon-Dak Tip-Off Tournament was Michelle Arens, a 6'1" sophomore forward. During the Buccaneers' three tournament games, she shot 46% from the field, scoring 38 points, along with 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Michelle is from Ankara, Turkey and she attended Tema High School.
