Dawson Bucs Roll to 10th Win Behind Gros Ventre’s 34 Points
On Wednesday night in Glendive, the Dawson Community College Buccaneers won their 10th game of the season by defeating the visiting Dickinson State University Blue Hawks 92-62 behind Damon Gros Ventre’s 34 points. DSU came out hot in the opening minutes, nailing three shots from long range and earning an 11-5 advantage and then again at 16-10. Down by one point halfway through the opening half, Gros Ventre went on a personal 8-0 run to put the Bucs up 29-22. They followed that up a few minutes later with a 10-0 run before the Blue Hawks responded with a couple more 3-pointers. Dawson closed the half with an offensive rebound and putback by Alexsis Nika at the buzzer to enter the locker room up 47-34. The Bucs forced ten turnovers in the first half and were led by Gros Ventre’s 16 points.
Dickinson opened the second half with another 3-pointer from Treyson Dayton, but then Dawson scored the next six points. The lead stayed around 15 points for a while until the Bucs went on a 14-2 run which included dunks by Chris Davidson and Joe Mpoyo and two more 3-pointers from Gros Ventre. From there DCC cruised to the 30 point win. They held the visitors to 26% shooting in the second half and outrebounded them 30-15.
“It wasn’t our best night tonight,” explained Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. They played us tough and gave us a run for our money. We have to get better at communicating defensively and take care of the ball offensively, but rebounding is the area we have to really show some improvement. Damon really gave us a lift tonight. I’m not sure what this game would have been like without him.”
Gros Ventre finished with 34 points by going 13-18 from the field and 8-12 from the 3-point line. He also pulled down a game high 8 rebounds. Ty Buckmon added 12 points and Chris Davidson scored 11 points to go along with 7 rebounds.
Britton Cranston and DC Stewart had 14 points each for Dickinson State.
Dawson is now 10-4 on the season and will take a break for Final Exams before they return to action on the road against Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming on December 15th at 7:30 pm.
