Dawson remains unbeaten with blowout of Williston
Monday night against the Williston State College Tetons, the DCC Buccaneers took control of the game with 11:40 left in the first half on a bucket by Jalen Tot; and then never looked back. They held the visitors without scoring for the next five minutes and then only one point over the next four minutes. The Bucs went from being down 12-9 to holding a commanding 34-13 lead with their 22-4 run. Their defense forced 17 turnovers in the opening half and held Williston to 28% shooting from the field and 14% from the 3-point line. It was a balanced effort by Dawson with eight different people scoring in the first half, led by 9 points from Reggie Martin and 8 points from Kose Egbule in only 6 minutes of action. Egbule closed out the half with three free throws and a 3-pointer in the final minute and give Dawson a 44-24 advantage.
The home team went cold for the first four minutes of the second half until Charles Lampten finally scored inside to stop the bleeding. The closest the visiting Tetons got in the second half was 11, but Riley Spoonhunter connected from long range and Kennedy Brown got a fast break dunk to push the lead back to 16 and Williston never got any closer. The largest lead of the game was a 30 point advantage at 83-53. The margin stayed over 20 points for the entire final ten minutes of the game as Dawson sailed to a 93-66 victory.
DCC forced 32 turnovers on the night and converted those into 35 points. Their bench outscored Williston 65-13.
Coach Joe Peterson shared his thoughts, “Tonight was one of those nights when our defense gave our offense time to get warmed up. We struggled to score at times, but our defense held them back until we started hitting shots. I thought our guys executed our game plan well. They are a different kind of a team and you have to change up some of the ways you usually play, but we adapted well and were able to exert our will on them, especially defensively. Tonight might have been the best we have played over a full forty minutes.”
It was a balanced effort for Dawson with all 14 players seeing action and 11 of them getting in the scoring column. Eight different players scored at least 8 points for the victors. Dawson was led by Riley Spoonhunter's 15 points (3 3pt) and Kose Egbule's 14 points (7/8 FTs). Reggie Martin had 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, Kell Schwers added 10 points (4/7 FG), and Kennedy Brown scored 10 points (5/6 FG).
Williston State was led by Alonzo Linton's 16 points and 4 rebounds. Keenan Reynolds added 14 points and 4 rebounds as well.
Dawson Community College is now 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in the conference. They will continue conference play this Thursday at home against Miles Community College.
