Dawson wins 9th in a row
The Dawson Community College Buccaneers won their ninth game in a row by beating Dakota College Bottineau on the road 112-68. It was the largest margin of the season for Dawson (44 points) and the most points they have scored this season. The win moves the Bucs to 19-2 on the season with one game left tomorrow night. It will be a rematch with the same Lumberjack team they faced tonight.
Head Coach Joe Peterson commented, "Dakota College really fought hard and kept it close, but our depth just wore them down as the game went on. It seemed like everybody who went in the game for us was ready to play and it was fun to see some of the guys who haven't played as much lately, get a chance to shine. I loved how unselfish we played. It will be mentally challenging to turn back around tomorrow and play the same team again. Hopefully we can lock in defensively and control the boards from the start tomorrow night."
Dawson started the game quickly, burying shot after shot and went on to shoot 61% from the field and 43% from 3 point range in the first half. They built up a 12 point lead with four minutes remaining, but DCB hung around by shooting 50% from the field and 45% from the 3-point line with Trayvon Barney scoring 15 and hitting three from long range. Despite Dawson's good shooting, they only led 46-39 at half.
They actually improved on that in the second half, shooting 67% from the field and a blistering 61% from 3-point range (11-18). The Bucs only missed 11 shots in the entire second half and outrebounded Dakota College 20-9. The Lumberjacks cooled off and only shot 42% from the field and only made 1 of 9 from long range. Dawson outscored them 66-29 in the final twenty minutes.
All fourteen players scored for Dawson with six scoring in double digits. Dawson assisted on 26 of their 43 field goals. The Buccaneers were led by Michael Jok and Kennedy Brown as they both scored 16 points (6-7 FG and 7-7 FG, respectively). Riley Spoonhunter poured in 13 points, while Kell Schwers added 13 points.
It was the best shooting night of the season for Dawson, finishing at 64% from the field.
Dakota College at Bottineau's Trayvon Barney led the Lumberjacks with 21 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Kionne Layne added 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Dakota College at Bottineau's fast tempo allowed them to keep the game close for a while, but the depth of the Buccaneers eventually wore them down in the end.
Dawson and Dakota College at Bottineau will face off again tomorrow night for a rematch in the final regular season game for both teams.
