Dawson Wins Second Straight
Basketball Wins 94-72
In Billings on Wednesday, Dawson dug themselves a 14 point hole in the first half, but battled back to beat the Rocky Mountain JV team by 22 points for their second straight win. Dawson shot 54% from the 3 point line (15-28) and 85% from the free throw line (17-20). They also outrebounded Rocky 45-35.
Early on the Battlin Bears were sparked by the play of Braxton Haws and Cleveland Harvey who both had 10 points in the first half. They built a 14 point lead, but Dawson’s good shooting put them back in control just before half-time. Marcus Stephens led the comeback effort, scoring 11 points in the opening twenty minutes. Dawson netted eight 3-pointers in the first half with Cam Dunfee connecting twice, Stephens three times and three others getting one each. The Bucs took a 43-37 lead into the locker room after a bucket by Stephens with three seconds remaining.
In the second half, Dawson had a 12 rebound advantage on the boards and continued their hot shooting from long range, going 7-16 from the 3 point line. The visitors maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half and cruised to a 94-72 win.
DCC Coach Joe Peterson commented, “I don’t think we played particularly well, but we shot the ball well and they missed some shots they would normally make, though some of that was because we sped them up and wore them down with our depth. They are a scrappy team and have a pretty high basketball IQ. I wasn’t happy that we had to come back from the first half deficit. In the end though, we battled through some adversity, learned more about our team and got the win.”
Dawson was led in scoring by Marcus Stephens with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Cam'ron Dunfee also scored in double figures with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Beau Sanstistevan chipped in with 11 points. Rocky was led by Elijah Barkell's 14 points and 14 rebounds and Josh Bodin’s 20 points.
The Bucs have a few days off for Thanksgiving, but will be back in action on Wednesday night, November 28th at home vs. a tough Central Wyoming College team in a 6:00 pm contest.
