Dawson Loses another Overtime Game
For the 2nd straight game, the Dawson Community College Buccaneers blew a double digit lead in the 2nd half and eventually lost in overtime to Northwest College 81-79. Camron Dunfee hit a 3-pointer off an assist from Man Man Baker with 8:31 remaining and put the Bucs up 59-48, but Reme Torbert wouldn’t let the Trappers go down without a fight. Torbert drove the lane and got to the basket numerous times and also capitalized on eleven free throws. Lagio Grantsaan also took control on the boards to help the visitors stay alive. Torbert nailed a 3-pointer with 1:10 left in regulation to pull within two points, but Devin Collins answered back on the other end with a basket inside to stretch the lead to 4 with 39 seconds remaining. Torbert came back down and launched another 3-pointer that was off the mark this time, but Collins was called for a foul, sending Torbert to the line for three free throws. He made the first two and the third bounced out and was corralled by Brian Howell who gave it to Grantsaan for a lay-up to tie the game up with nine seconds remaining. Man Man Baker raced down the court and got to the rim, but missed it with no foul called. The rebound bounced around and CJ Nelson dove on the floor and got off the shot from his knees as the buzzer sounded, but couldn’t connect.
In overtime, Northwest jumped out to an early lead on buckets by Saheem Anthony and Howell. CJ Nelson answered with one from long range on an assist by Reece Green. Nelson followed it up with another drive to give the lead back to the Bucs. The lead changed hands a couple of times until Howell tied it up at 79 with 1:11 left. A 3-point attempt by the Bucs Beau Santistevan rimmed out and Darius Webster gave the Trappers a lead with an offensive rebound and putback. Nelson and Reece Green both got good looks late, but couldn’t finish it off. With 2 seconds remaining, they had one more chance with the ball out of bounds under their own basket. Santistevan’s shot at the buzzer fell out.
The Bucs shot a dismal 10-27 from the free throw line. They forced the Trappers into 22 turnovers and scored 22 points off those turnovers, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the poor shooting from the field and the free throw line. Torbert finished with 28 points and Grantsaan pulled down 17 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. The Bucs had four guys in double figures with Dunfee leading the way by scoring 17. Nelson added 15 while Collins scored 14 and Baker had 11.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Bucs as they welcome one of the best teams on their schedule, Sheridan College, on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
