Dawson Easily Wins on the Road at NDSCS
The Dawson Buccaneers won their 9th straight game and the 4th straight road game on Sunday, taking it to their long time rivals, the North Dakota State College of Science Wildcats, in Wahpeton, ND. The 94-69 win boosts their overall record to 22-2 on the season and 8-0 in Mon-Dak Conference play.
The Bucs jumped out to a 30-12 lead in the first half before the WIldcats knew what hit them. NDSCS rebounded with a little run of their own to make it more interesting towards the end of the opening half. It was hard for them to overcome their poor shooting (35% from the field and 27% from 3), but they garnered 10 offensive rebounds and capitalized with 10 second chance points. On the other end, Dawson shot 58% from the field to help them race to a 47-35 half-time advantage.
In the beginning of the second half, NDSCS got hot from long range, making several 3-pointers. Dawson was answering with two-pointers, but the Wildcats quickly cut the deficit to eight points. They wouldn't get any closer than that the rest of the night as the Buccaneers gradually built a twenty point lead and sailed to victory.
"We didn't do a very good job in the last ten minutes of the first half rebounding and we didn't play very smart," shared Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. "In the second half we held our composure, started executing our game plan and played more together. It takes toughness and composure to win on the road consistently."
Dawson shot 58% from the field and 40% from the 3-point line for the game. They outrebounded the Wildcats 44-37. Points off turnovers also went the Bucs way (16-2). The Bucs were pretty consistent in each half, beating NDSCS 47-35 in the first half and 47-34 in the second half. They also held them to 35% shooting in both halves.
Justin Asi finished with a game high 26 points. Seth Amunrud and Brandon Hymes chipped in with 14 points each. Jikany Deang led NDSCS with 15 points.
Dawson will stay on the road to play at Lake Region State College on Monday night at 8:30 pm CST.
