Dawson Loses to Sheridan at Home
The DCC Buccaneers couldn’t overcome another slow start and dropped their first game of the season 73-66 to Sheridan College. On Friday night, they dug themselves a 13 point hole and climbed out to win by 27 points. On Saturday, Sheridan jumped on them early and then held on at the end to get the win. It was back and forth in the first three minutes with Devin Collins making a couple of free throws and a basket inside, followed up by a 3-pointer by Kolten Hitt for Dawson while Sheridan connected on a 3-pointer and two baskets from inside the arc. Tied at 7 each, Dawson’s Man Man Baker picked up his third foul in the opening minutes and the Generals went on an 18-5 run to take a commanding lead. With seven minutes to go in the opening half, the Bucs found themselves down by an identical score as the previous night, 25-12. But this time, they just couldn’t seem to cut into that lead and Sheridan ended the half with a 3-point by Brett Thompson to go up 40-20. Dawson shot a measly 27% in the half compared to Sheridan’s 48%.
The second half didn’t get much better until there was five minutes left to play. Although Dawson outscored Sheridan 23-14 to finish the game, the 16 point deficit was too much to overcome. The Bucs outshot Sheridan 51% to 30% in the second half, but it was too little, too late. Sheridan put 4 guys in double figures and Dawson had 3. The loss dropped the Bucs to 4-1 on the season and Sheridan is now 3-2.
Dawson Coach Joe Peterson shared his thoughts, “Sheridan played a smart game. They slowed it down and controlled the tempo by handling our pressure well. The fact that they got off to an early lead allowed them to do that. We didn’t execute our game plan very well tonight. We knew what they would do and we were prepared for it, but we lacked the intelligence and toughness to carry it out. It’s a good reality check for us to see that we still have a long way to go.”
The Bucs will hit the road for a tournament in Gillette, Wyoming next weekend before returning home for games on November 22, 23 and 24.
