The Dawson Buccaneers extended their home winning streak to 21 games on Thursday night with an 89-74 win over Dakota College Bottineau. They forced 20 turnovers and had a nine rebound advantage on the offensive glass to move to 17-4 overall and 10-2 in conference games.
"We battled hard on the glass tonight," shared Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. "If we can rebound like that night in and night out, then I know we will have a lot of success. Sam Massaquoi gave us a good lift off the bench. Our depth is a big key for us in games like this. We have a lot of different ways to win a game, but rebounding has to be a constant."
Dawson outrebounded the visiting Lumberjacks 48-32 overall and 17-8 on the offensive glass. The Bucs had a 16-4 advantage on second chance points.
Dakota College scored the first five points of the game on a layup by Brendan Redhead and a 3-pointer from Brayden West-Linnett. The Bucs responded with eleven straight points capped by a shot clock beating 3-pointer from Roniel Oguekwe. It was the first 3-pointer of his college career. Dawson held onto the lead the rest of the way. Dawson made another 10-2 run halfway through the first half to take a 28-19 lead. DCB cut the deficit to five points before DCC outscored them 10-3 behind four points from Demetric Kindle. The Bucs took that twelve point difference into the half-time break, 47-35. Dawson forced 15 turnovers in the opening half. Dakota College stayed within striking distance by sinking 12-15 from the free throw line.
In the second half the closest the Lumberjacks got was within seven points. Dawson kept their lead at double digits most of the way as they cruised to the fifteen point win. DCB's Redhead tried to keep it close by scoring 22 points after half-time, but he didn't get enough help from his supporting cast and very little from the reserves. Redhead finished with a game high 34 points out of his team's 74.
In a balanced attack, Dawson placed four scorers in double figures, led by Ty Buckmon's 17 points and 8 rebounds. Seth Amunrud scored 16 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Massaquoi finished with 12 points off the bench and Justin Asi contributed 11 points and 6 rebounds.
The Bucs will take a few days off before their next home game on Wednesday night vs. Lake Region State College. That game will be DCC Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. The game sponsor will be Glendive Medical Center. GMC will be giving away stadium cushions to the first 150 fans, free popcorn and other giveaways.
