The 5th seeded Lady Buccaneers of Dawson Community College lost 68-75 to the 4th seed Lake Region State College in the first game of the Mon-Dak Pre-Season Tournament in New Town, ND. The Lady Royals jumped out in the first quarter to lead 25-19. The Lady Bucs would make a run of their own and win the second quarter 19-13.
Dawson would continue their strong play into the second half leading Lake Region 18-11 in the third quarter. However, foul trouble and 16 missed free throws plagued the Lady Bucs and Lake Region would force 33 turnovers overall, and capitalize on it all outscoring DCC 26-12 in the fourth quarter.
Dawson shot 11-27 from the foul line and Lake Region shot 28-42. Point guard duo Ashley Orozco and Tamiya Francis, along with wing player Cheryl Aubou all fouled out. With no legitimate ball handling on the floor, the Lady Royals would full court zone press Dawson causing havoc for the 4th seed team.
Starting center Ashya Klopfenstein would be out the rest of the game, as well as the rest of the tournament weekend, due to a concussion in the early part of the first quarter. Orozco led the game with 21 points, along with 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Crippling her statistics were a game high 8 turnovers. Haley Olson chipped in with 11 points off the bench, along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. The lone sophomore on the DCC team, Arena Plenty, added 11 points of her own, with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. The Lady Bucs were outrebounded 41-33.
Dawson will play 8th seed Dakota College at Bottineau at 12:00pm CST in the consolation bracket.
