6’5 forward Taylan Barrett signed to play basketball next year for Asbury University. Asbury is located in Wilmore, KY and was ranked as the #1 college in the South according to US News and World Report. It is an NAIA school in the River States Conference and finished this past season 17-12 while receiving top 25 votes. The Eagles led the nation in points per game in 2017, averaging 97.7 per game and finished 2nd in 2018, averaging 92.5 points per game.
Barrett will fit in well with their high powered offensive attack. He provided the Buccaneers with some needed scoring punch off the bench this past season, averaging 8.3 points per game and grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting over 55% from the field for the season. His season high of 19 points came in the Bucs 20 point comeback at home against Lake Region State College late in the season. He posted double digits in rebounds in three games this year.
Associate Head Coach Russ Abner commented, "We are beyond excited to have Taylan join our basketball family here at Asbury! From the moment we got to know Taylan, his personality and maturity level both on and off the court really impressed us. On the court we feel like Taylan really fits our style of play. His ability to play a number of different positions both offensively and defensively is something we believe can really help us. Coming to us from a winning program like Dawson only adds on to our excitement. We can't wait to get to work with him."
Barrett is the fourth signee the Buccaneers have had this spring with a few more expected to sign soon. Bucs Head Coach Joe Peterson praised the forward, “It seems like a great fit for TB. He brings a lot to the table. I have a lot of respect for Coach Abner and their program at Asbury and have appreciated how they have handled the recruiting process. I love seeing our guys go to good programs and good schools.”
