The Dawson Community College Buccaneers moved to 5-0 on the season by winning their third game in three nights 102-82 over the Rocky Mountain College JV team. The Bucs won Friday night by 2, Saturday night by 70 and Sunday by 20. In the first two games the Bucs jumped out to early leads, and they continued that trend by scoring the first twelve points. Reece Green scored a bucket inside, followed by a mid-range shot by Tyrell Harper, two free throws by Harper and a couple of 3-pointers from Brent Finn. The closest the visitors would ever get after that was a 7 point deficit at 28-21 when Pernell Morsette nailed a 3-pointer. The Bucs scored 11 straight after that to build a 39-21 lead with all five of the Buccaneers on the floor making a field goal. The biggest lead of the first half came on a Fernando Lopez field goal that made it 49-29. The Battlin Bears finished the half on a mini 7-3 run with Koltin Haugrose earning a 4-point play with 33 seconds remaining in the half. The teams went into the locker room with the scoreboard reading 52-36. Finn led the way with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Harper and Green contributed 8 points each. Harper also had 3 rebounds and 4 assists in a well-played first half. Ryan Zentner led the Bears with 14 points. The Bucs shot 64% from the field in the opening half and the same percentage from the 3 point line. They also forced 11 turnovers and held the Bears to 37% shooting.
DCC pushed the lead up to 21 in the opening three minutes of the 2nd half on consecutive 3-pointers from Travon Hamilton and Finn. For the rest of the game they kept the lead between 16-24 points and cruised to a 20 point victory 102-82. All fourteen Buccaneers scored and contributed in the victory. They were led by Finn’s 20 points. Three others ended in double figures with Tate Savoie adding 12, Harper 10 and Simon Falokun 10 points and 5 rebounds, all in the 2nd half. Hamilton finished with 7 assists and Harper had 5. They shot 57.7% from the field for the game and 44% from the 3-point line. They outrebounded Rocky 45-31. Their bench outscored Rocky 47-24. For the visitors, Haugrose finished with 22 and Zentner had 17.
DCC Coach Joe Peterson commented, “We looked flat at times tonight and didn’t guard the way we are capable of, but managed to fight through the tiredness of playing our 3rd game in 3 days. We shot it extremely well, so if we would have just taken care of the ball better, we could have really put this game away.”
It’s the Buccaneers 5th straight win to open the season and they will get one more home game on Wednesday before hitting the road for the first time. The Battle of the Badlands will take place on Wednesday night between Dawson and Miles. The Lady Bucs will start at 5:30 pm and the Buccaneers will play at 7:30 pm. Last year’s games were instant classics and this year’s games show promise of being the same.
