DCC Men’s Basketball Signs 1st Player of 2018 Recruiting Class

Buccaneer Basketball Coach Joe Peterson announced the signing of Jaron Masis.  Originally from Limon, Costa Rica, Masis is a 6’9 210 lb senior at iTec Preparatory Academy in El Paso, Texas where he plays for legendary Coach Jesus Aragon.  The Rams have won two consecutive state championships in Class 2A of the Texas Christian Athletic League.  Last year, Masis averaged 13 ppg, 9 rpg and 3 bpg.  He was named First Team All-Tournament and First Team All-State.  His team placed third in the Prep School National Tournament in Wichita, Kansas.  Last month, he led his team to the championship of an international tournament in Mazatlan, Mexico where he was named MVP.

Before coming to America, Masis was a member of the Costa Rican National team and played in international tournaments in Panama and Puerto Rico.  DCC coach Joe Peterson has had good success with Costa Rican players, including Daniel Shedden who was the Bucs leading scorer and earned All-Region honors last year.  Shedden is currently playing for the MSU-B Yellowjackets.

In addition to his exploits on the floor, Masis is an excellent student who wants to major in Engineering and is also a member of the National Honor Society.  Masis explained his college choice, “Being a part of Dawson Community College is a great opportunity to continue my studies in the United States and to continue my academic development.  Another great reason is to continue playing basketball and be able to improve my skills.”

Coach Peterson was excited, “Jaron is a solid young man who works hard on and off the court.  With his size and even longer wingspan, he has a high ceiling to what he can achieve.  We want to help him develop his talents and reach his potential as a player and a student.”
